Dragon’s Milk (Dragon Chronicles #1)

Summary:

"You must go to the dragon. You must leave tonight."

Before she even hears the words, Kaeldra already knows what she must do. She must search out the mother dragon whose draclings have just hatched and somehow get some of her precious milk. It's the only way to save her foster-sister's life. Kaeldra would rather not go. It's much too terrifying, much too dangerous. But Kaeldra knows that she's the only one who can do it. For she is the only one who can actually communicate with dragons.

But little does Kaeldra know what she's getting into. She's about to begin a journey that will entwine her fate with that of three little draclings and one would-be dragonslayer. A journey that will become a struggle for life.  (Summary and cover courtesy of goodreads.com)

Review:

God I adored this book as a kid!  I didn’t realize it was a series though so I may have to grab the subsequent books soon.  I saw this at the second hand bookstore recently and decided I just had to pick it up and give it a reread.  The book was just as good as an adult and as a bonus enough time had passed that I had forgotten the plot twists!

Kaeldra is an awesome heroine who is slightly a tomboy, but still accessible to large audience of girls.  I think she does a good job of “being a girl” while still able to manage for herself.  In this book she really grows into herself and embraces her differences despite her initial yearning to earn approval from her adopted family.  And that is all set to a backdrop of dragons, conflict and mild romance to keep it interesting.  I’d recommend this book to anyone with young readers who love adventure.

Warning: Contains some violence

Rating: 4 stars!

Who should read it? Parents and younger audiences that are dragon fans!  I think those who enjoy Redwall would really like this series as well.
