A Court of Thorns and Roses (A Court of Thorns and Roses #1)

Summary:

When nineteen-year-old huntress Feyre kills a wolf in the woods, a beast-like creature arrives to demand retribution for it. Dragged to a treacherous magical land she only knows about from legends, Feyre discovers that her captor is not an animal, but Tamlin—one of the lethal, immortal faeries who once ruled their world.

As she dwells on his estate, her feelings for Tamlin transform from icy hostility into a fiery passion that burns through every lie and warning she's been told about the beautiful, dangerous world of the Fae. But an ancient, wicked shadow grows over the faerie lands, and Feyre must find a way to stop it . . . or doom Tamlin—and his world—forever.  (Summary and cover courtesy of goodreads.com)

Review:

As a huge fan of Sarah J. Maas’ “Throne of Glass” series, I knew that I HAD to give her other series a shot.  While still containing violence and some heavy topics, this series still felt a bit “lighter” than the other and perhaps more accessible to more people.  That effect may because the book is set in a fantasy world where Fae are extremely powerful.  But please don’t think this is a bubble-gum YA book, there are still many dark themes throughout.

As usual, there were multiple twists in this book that I didn’t see coming and I absolutely loved it.  Maas does such a good job making you want to say “WHY?!?!”, but of course the books would be much shorter if things lined up perfectly.  For example, I thought the book was almost over and then I realized that I was only 2/3rds of the way through.  In an effort of avoiding spoilers, I’m just going to say: nothing is what it seems, and there’s always a reason something happens in Maas’ books.

Warning: Contains repeated violence and sexual content.

Rating: 5 stars!

Who should read it? Fantasy fans that aren’t afraid of some darker themes, but still want a whimsical twist on the storyline.
