The Sea of Monsters (Percy Jackson and the Olympians #2)

Summary:

The heroic son of Poseidon makes an action-packed comeback in the second must-read installment of Rick Riordan's amazing young readers series. Starring Percy Jackson, a "half blood" whose mother is human and whose father is the God of the Sea, Riordan's series combines cliffhanger adventure and Greek mythology lessons that results in true page-turners that get better with each installment.

In this episode, “The Sea of Monsters”, Percy sets out to retrieve the Golden Fleece before his summer camp is destroyed, surpassing the first book's drama and setting the stage for more thrills to come. (Summary and cover courtesy of goodreads.com)

Review:

In this sequel to “The Lightening Thief”, Percy gets back into trouble with his friends Grover and Annabeth.  As alluded to in the first book in the series, I felt that Percy at times acted a little too young or a touch thick that I think could be frustrating for some.  That being said, I think this series has several moments that would engage begrudging readers and keep their interest in the series.

This story felt a little more predictable since we already know a bit about the setup for camp half-blood and the world with gods in it.  That being said, the overall read was quite good and fun even if it was clear where things were going to go.  I think I will continue on the series as the premise of them does look new (to me!).

Warning: Contains some violence.

Rating: 3 stars!

Who should read it? Fans of middle grade fantasy and mythology.
