Nona the Ninth (The Locked Tomb #3)
Summary:
Her city is under siege.
The zombies are coming back.
And all Nona wants is a birthday party.
In many ways, Nona is like other people. She lives with her family, has a job at her local school, and loves walks on the beach and meeting new dogs. But Nona's not like other people. Six months ago she woke up in a stranger's body, and she's afraid she might have to give it back.
The whole city is falling to pieces. A monstrous blue sphere hangs on the horizon, ready to tear the planet apart. Blood of Eden forces have surrounded the last Cohort facility and wait for the Emperor Undying to come calling. Their leaders want Nona to be the weapon that will save them from the Nine Houses. Nona would prefer to live an ordinary life with the people she loves, with Pyrrha and Camilla and Palamedes, but she also knows that nothing lasts forever.
And each night, Nona dreams of a woman with a skull-painted face...(Summary and cover courtesy of goodreads.com)
Review:
“Gideon the Ninth” threw us into a wonderful new mystery, “Harrow the Ninth” was the epitome of an unreliable narrator to due (literal) memory loss, then “Nona the Ninth” is a breath of fresh air following a young civilian trying to make her way in the world and figure out who she is at the same time. Somehow Nona wriggles into your heart along with Camilla and Palamedes.
This installment of The Locked Tomb will be much more accessible for readers as it’s a little more straightforward without jumping narrators. It is also easier to pick up on some of the tweaks of this multiverse given that three books in there’s a little more context. I did not reread the previous two books, but only had a handful of elements that I looked up on fandom for a refresher. After Harrow I wasn’t sure if I’d continue the series, but now I’m keen to find out what happens next!
Warning: Contains repeated violence.
Rating: 4 stars!
Who should read it? Only folks who have read the first two in the series.
